Gaithersburg, MD – Wednesday, August 21 –  The Gaithersburg-Germantown Chamber of Commerce (GGCC) partnered with the Corporate Volunteer Council of Montgomery County (CVC-MC) to support Manna Food Center’s “Smart Sacks” Program.

Over 70 attendees arrived at the event sponsor location – Highlands at Germantown Conference & Banquet Center. – with canned fruit and vegetables, peanut butter, rice, pasta, oatmeal, macaroni and cheese, trail mixes and more to support the cause. In just two short hours, Manna reported they collected 196 pounds of food and over $200 in monetary donations from the GGCC / CVC-MC event. Through Manna’s Smart Sacks children are sent home with backpacks full of kid & family friendly food every Friday so they have food on the weekends to sustain them.

“The food collecting during this event will help us jumpstart the Smart Sacks inventory for the beginning of the school year. The support we receive from the GGCC will contribute to Manna Food Center’s efforts to provide weekend food assistance to nearly 2200 students in 56 schools across Montgomery County. It was especially rewarding to be able to attend and express our gratitude to so many GGCC members/sponsors that consistently donate their skills, time, energy and resources to Manna’s mission,” said Jenna Umbriac MS, RD, Director of Nutrition Programs for Manna Food Center.

The GGCC believes in building strong and effective community partnerships and one of the ways they do this is by partnering with the CVC-MC annually. The GGCC started off the evening by congratulation the CVC-MC on recently being named the Points of Light Corporate Volunteer Council of the Year Award. The CVC was chosen for the award based on their demonstrated commitment to teaching businesses how to partner with and support nonprofit organizations by helping create successful volunteer or charitable programs that benefit the businesses, their employees and the community.
