Held at the Hilton Washington DC North/Gaithersburg those that attended were able to get a better understanding of what the Affordable Care Act is, the provisions of the act and how they affect them, their business & their employees and what specifically they have to do and when. Our speakers were Kevin Yang, Chief Information Officer for the Maryland Health Benefit Exchange and Marta Perez, SVP/Chief HR Officer for Adventist HealthCare.  David Denton, Executive Director for Asbury Methodist Village was the Master of Ceremonies.

“The Affordable Care Act could have major impacts on business and the benefits they provide. It is important for the Chamber to help educate our members on the impact of this legislative. It was a great way to convey a lot of detailed information in a short period of time. Based on the comments we received, the attendees really appreciated the knowledge they gained,” said Marilyn Balcombe, GGCC Executive Director.

The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (ACA) that President Barack Obama signed into law on March 23, 2010 will be entirely implemented by next year. Most U.S. citizens and legal residents will be required to have health insurance. The County’s Health & Human Services reported there are currently 52,000 uninsured in the Capital Region. Those without coverage will pay a tax penalty of the greater of $695 per year up to a max of 3x’s that amount ($2,085) per family or 2.5% of household income. It was noted that 95% of the businesses in Montgomery County are considered small businesses, employing less than 50 employees. The ACA enacted comprehensive health insurance reforms designed to ensure Americans have access to quality, affordable health insurance. Yang & Perez were able to help the attendees better understand the nuts and bolts of the ACA.
